There’s music by Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, and music by drummer, composer, and bandleader, Allison Miller. Also, hear sound art by Minnesota-based Scott L. Miller, and Paganini arranged by Liszt, recomposed by New York-based Scott D. Miller. Plus, a work by computer music composer Carl Stone.
Carl Stone, Scott D. Miller, and DJ Spooky create works that contain chopped and spliced pre-existing recordings, like Scott D. Miller’s chopped and looped “Paganini Liszt Distortion,” sourced from recordings of the "Grande Étude de Paganini No. 3", by Franz Liszt. There’s also a portion of DJ Spooky’s reimagining of D.W. Griffith’s infamously racist 1915 silent film The Birth of a Nation, as “Rebirth of a Nation.” DJ Spooky has cut and layered the recorded sounds of a string quartet – Kronos Quartet- some piano, adding beats and other electronics, along with stills from the original film.
Then, hear music by drummer, composer, and bandleader, Allison Miller from the record, No Morphine No Lilies, with her group Boom Tic Boom, which features violinist Jenny Scheinman, pianist Myra Melford, Todd Sickafoose on bass, and special guest, the cellist Erik Friedlander. There’s also an immersive audio-visual soundscape experience by Minnesota-based composer Scott L. Miller. The work is “Raba” (which means bog in Estonian), and features the Estonian band, Ensemble U. Also hear sliced and diced computer music by Carl Stone, partially based on Mozart opera – “Sonali” (named, as are most of his works, for a favorite restaurant.) -Caryn Havlik
